• CORONAS-Foton is the third and final launch in this Russian series of solar observing satellites: previous satellites were CORONAS-I (launched March 2, 1994) and CORONAS-F (July 31, 2001). Unlike the previous two satellites, this uses the VNIIEM Meteor-3 satellite platform: approximately cylindrical plus two vanes of solar panels. The satellite will study solar flares in the extreme-UV, X-ray and gamma-ray ranges.
• This was the final launch of the three-stage Tsyklon vehicle.
